HARVARD VLSI GROUP
Ultra Low Bandwidth Video Coder/Decoder
Graduate Student: Sang Hoon Hong

Video coding for low bandwidth channels requires high compression
ratio and usually low image resolution. Many video compression systems
use transform coding based video coders. The main algorithm or standard
in the field of ultra low bandwidth is H.263. It is very similar to the
MPEG standards. These standards, however, may not be optimal for VLSI
implementations. Especially for low-power and compact environments such
as a mobile video phone or a one-chip camera with video compression.
We are investigating in methods that could be more suitable for VLSI
implementations. In particular, we are looking in the form of vector
quantization.
